Daily Inspiration for August 23rd, 2012

I think I shall now write some daily inspiration for tomorrow morning. Why not? Just back from vacation, feeling refreshed but in need of focus as I transition back into work.

Tomorrow I will:

  • Plan my day before reading my email

  • Focus on Quality

  • Spend some time in Quadrant 2

  • Review the vision of each of the many projects I'm on, and the high level app-dev requirements / tasks

  • Spend some diligently focused time in "bang-bang" responsiveness mode, catching up on email

  • Pause somewhere in there to ask the Lord for help


And that should make for a satisfying day. :^)

During the Internet blackout today against SOPA, I was complaining on VoiceOfTheDBA that I wish we could get a blackout on the recent "indefinite detention of US citizens" fiasco. Hiding an ASPXGridView Delete button with HTMLRowCreated vs. CommandButtonInitialize

It's pretty typical in Administration forms to need to hide buttons on certain rows for various reasons. Particularly it is nice to hide the Delete button if in fact the row in question is being used in other places in the app. This is a nice feature to let the user know up front that the row in question is in use, rather than them trying to delete it and getting a foreign key related error after the fact. For years now in DevExpress ASPxGridView's I have been handling this in the HtmlRowCreated event. And I have been doing it wrong. Why I still don't use Entity Framework for small-to-medium business applications

This post is really about the cons of Entity Framework. I know, I know, it's sacrilege to not be in love with EF and using it everywhere, and I feel I am taking some professional risk expressing these thoughts. But I actually find Entity Framework to be problematic in many ways, both technologically and philosophically, and I am frustrated that it is now the "standard" way to do data access in Microsoft land. To be the standard implies "generally suitable for most applications", which in my experience, Entity Framework is not.
